Gregory Coates studied at Corcoran School of Art, Washington D.C., and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In addition, he held numerous residencies that informed his work -  such as Gas works, London: The Studio Museum in Harlem, Triangle Workshop, Cape town, SA and Upstate New York; Tacheles, Berlin and from 2010 to 2015 Artist in Residence, Obama City Fukui, Japan. Since the early 90s, Coates has mounted numerous solo projects of large and small scale paintings, sculptures and assemblages, including to be distributed at Thread waxing Space, NYC, Strut at Mangan Projects, NYC and Galerie Denkraum Vienna, Austria; Permission, at N’Namdi Gallery Chicago. Site-specifics such as Fences were installed on top of a Swiss Glacier (Verbier 3 D) and Twenty at Kamigamo Shrine, Kyoto Japan (a UNESO world heritage site). Consider this – Coates’ 2014 solo show at N’Namdi Contemporary, Miami yielded an extensive interview in Art Pulse Magazine, and Minutes: New Paintings Exhibition at the N’Namdi Contemporary Detroit 2016, included an accompanying catalogue. Coates’ artwork is included in museum collections, such as the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and The Studio Museum in Harlem, and many corporate and private collections.  He is a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant Recipient, a New York Foundation Fellow, and was awarded the Pollock-Krasner  and Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation (Emergency) Grant. Coates currently lives and works in Allentown, PA.
