“As a Southerner, storytelling comes naturally to me, so there is always a narrative within my work. I try to relate to the viewer things we have in common, things all of us have gone through: success, failure, love, loss, joy, hope, and hopelessness. By depicting such experiences in personal terms rather than attempting to do so in universal terms, I believe we find that we have far more in common than not.”

Michael Meads was born in Anniston, AL, in 1966. He received a BFA from Auburn University in 1987 and an MFA from State University of New York at Albany in 1990. Meads and his husband moved to New Orleans in 1998, fulfilling a lifelong dream and deepening a relationship with a place that has served as setting, character, and muse for most of his work since then. With the loss of their home and studio in 2005 by the events surrounding Hurricane Katrina, they were displaced from New Orleans. In 2006 Meads received a Joan Mitchell Foundation Emergency Grant to support his artistic practice during this period, and completed a three-month artist residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute. Now based in northern New Mexico, Meads continues to make and exhibit his drawings, paintings, and photographs. His work is held in the collections of the Louisiana State Museum, New Orleans, LA; The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, LA; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; The Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, MA; and The Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Collection of Art, Prints, and Photographs at the New York Public Library, NY; and numerous private collections.
